Astronomical symbols have become a subject of interest not only among the professionals who deal with astronomy but also common people who does not possess much knowledge on the subject.

It is difficult to say when the astronomical symbols first came into emergence. But they can be traced back to early stages of history and culture of any ancient civilization. Astronomical symbols are basically the symbolic representation of celestial bodies which are needed for construction of theories and observation of different events related to astronomy.

Earlier such astronomical symbols were used by professional astrologers symbols to find out the influence of heavenly bodies on human life. But in recent times not only the professionals but the amateurs are also using such astronomical symbols. These astronomical symbols have remained a matter of curiosity among people. If you make a research on the history of astrology then you will find that from ancient times people have regarded that the planets and heavenly bodies have influenced our lives. The celestial bodies have an effect on all incidents of our lives. A symbol has been ascribed to all the planets and celestial bodies and these symbols are highly meaningful.

The symbol of Mercury, the first planet of our solar system is almost like a winged helmet whereas Venus represents a handed mirror.

Coming to our own planet, the earth, one will find the symbolic representation very similar to its own geographical structure. The symbol of earth is like a horizontal and a vertical line crisscrossing each other just as the equator and the prime meridian does. Earth is also represented as the symbol of Venus turned upside down. This symbol is commonly known as Globus Cruciger.

The symbol of Mars is similar to a shield and spear. The Jupiter which is the largest planet of the solar system symbolizes an eagle or even a thunderbolt. The symbol of Jupiter has a resemblance with the numerical 4. Again in many cultures Jupiter is associated with Thursday which is the fourth day of the week.

Saturn represents a scythe and sickle. The symbol of Uranus on the other hand is a combination of that of Mars and the sun. The symbol is also typical of that of platinum. A second symbol of Uranus symbolizes the alphabet “H” which is the initial alphabet of Herschel, the discoverer of the symbol.

The Neptune who is regarded as the Sea God in Greek Mythology is often represented by a trident. Astrologers have also ascribed some symbols for those planets which were discovered later or are segregated from the other planets of solar system due to some characteristic features. These planets are called dwarf planets. Unfortunately Pluto, the last planet of our solar system has been reduced to the status of a dwarf planet recently. The symbol of Pluto is similar to a monogram of combination of P and L.

The symbol of Ceres is like a sickle handled upside down. Unfortunately no symbol has been ascribed to Eris, one of the three dwarf planets.

One of the interesting feature of these astronomical symbols is that they are full of connotations that has been helpful to the persons who fin interest in astrology. So if you are interested in astrology and want to make a detailed study on the subject try to increase your knowledge on the astronomical symbols.
